Portland Community College MakerLab Holds H800 in High Esteem

November 7, 2016

Ethan Ouimet is the MakerLab Coordinator at Portland Community College MakerLab. He lives half time in Portland and half time in Eugene, where he also works at the University of Oregon MakerSpace and is finishing his degree in product design.

Entry into 3D Printing

Ouimet started 3D printing while pursuing a degree in product design at the University of Oregon. “Product design is akin to industrial design, but more focused on user experience and how humans interact with products. It requires a fair amount of prototyping, and we often turn to 3D printing to prototype our CAD models,” says Ouimet.

“Thanks to my major, I also have a love of shop environments, which I’m currently lucky enough to work in,” Ouimet explains. “I run two makerspaces: one at the University of Oregon and the other at Portland Community College, which is a beautiful shop with a ton of resources.” [Read more…]

3D Printing in the Makerspace at Oliver W. Winch Middle School

July 5, 2016

Maureen Borgeest is the Library Media Specialist and Debbie Kearney is the library assistant at Oliver W. Winch Middle School in South Glen Falls, NY. The middle school recently created a makerspace in the library, where they use the H800 3D printer.

Making the Makerspace a Reality

Students work on computers in the makerspace. As the Library Media Specialist, Mrs. Borgeest is always looking for ways to improve students’ access to technology and information. Thanks to her, along with the approval and resources of district officials, Oliver W. Winch Middle School opened their makerspace in October 2015.

“Makerspaces have been in existence in the library world for quite a few years, and I had read a lot about them both online and in professional journals,” explains Mrs. Borgeest. “It’s something I’ve thought is incredibly valuable and could see implementing in our own district, so I pitched the idea and our Administrator, Mr. Dawkins, and our Director of Technology, Mr. Spada. Both of them were very enthusiastic about it. They were incredible in making the makerspace a reality.” [Read more…]
